The name suggests a link with a fortification; the Castleton area was the site of Rochdale Castle. During the 13th century, Castleton was known as Castletown, or Castle Town. The canal granted jobs for hundreds of local residents as it enabled the construction of several cotton mills. The Manchester and Leeds Railway Company arrived in Castleton in 1839.

MMC submitted a planning application to build an “urban village” consisting of 650 homes, a children’s daycare centre and a business park on the site. However, asbestos containing materials were abundantly visible on the ground, and local residents claimed that there were numerous asbestos dumping sites across the area.
