Cargenbridge is referred to as a ‘village’ in 1848 in the Ordnance Survey Name Book. In 1962 the population quadrupled following the building of 36 new local authority houses. The extension of the boundaries of the county of Dumfriesshire over the River Nith did not extend as far as the village.

Cargenbridge etymology

The name dates back to at least 1753, when ‘Cargen bridge croft’ is recorded in the Kirkcudbrightshire land tax roll. Cargen itself has a number of possible Cumbric etymologies. It may be a compound formed from cajr ‘enclosed, defensible site’

Greyfriars Church, Dumfries Greyfriars Church, Dumfries is a Category A listed building in south west Scotland. The current building was built from 1866 to 1868 in the Victorian Gothic style. It is situated in a prominent position at the top of the High Street.

Cargenbridge Cargenbridge is located southwest of Dumfries and Galloway. It is in Troqueer parish, in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire.

Terregles House Terregles House was a late 18th-century country house in Kirkcudbrightshire. It replaced an earlier tower house, which had served as the seat of the Lords Herries, and later the Earls of Nithsdale.

Terregles Terregles is a village and civil parish in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It lies in the former county of Kirkcudbrightshire. The name is from Cumbric *trev-ïr-eglẹ:s, a borrowing of Latin ecclesia, ‘church building’ The parish contains the ruins of Lincluden Collegiate Church.
