Maxwellton Conservation Area

Maxwellton was the main area of settlement in the Barony lands of the ancient Calderwood Estate. From 1400 until about 1900, the Maxwells of Calderwood were the main landed family. The 18th–19th-century weaving village survives as the western part of the Calderwood neighbourhood. The campaign to save the village reached cabinet level in the House of Commons gained national publicity.
