The estate was beset with social problems which culminated in a riot in July 1992 when police carried out a drugs raid there. In 1997, the council bought out the pub and closed it down and demolished some of the 1,050 homes on the estate. The Lawrence Batley Theatre is a theatre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. It was originally built in 1819 as a Methodist chapel, called the Queen Street Chapel. The chief mason was Joseph Kaye, who was also responsible for the station. In 1973 the building was converted into an arts centre but serious structural problems were discovered by Kirklees Metropolitan Council in 1975. In 1989 the Kirkless Theatre Trust was given the go ahead to save the building from deterioration.
