The origin of the name is debated, with suggestions ranging from simply “Beor’s Wood” or Bearu. Bearu might be translated as ‘grove’, with the implication that this was open woodland used as pasture. Certainly there was a wide area of dense forest in the West Midlands in Anglo-Saxon times.
