The name ‘Alverstoke’ is most likely to be derived from a corruption of the name Alwara – an Anglo-Saxon Lady of the Manor – and Stoke, a settlement on the area. The name is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Alwarestock.

Portsmouth Block Mills The Portsmouth Block Mills were built during the Napoleonic Wars to supply the British Royal Navy with pulley blocks . Stokes Bay Lines The Stokes Bay Lines were part of the great Victorian fortification of Portsmouth Harbour under Lord Palmerston . In 1857 Major Jervois had proposed a complex system of moats (ditches), ramparts and batteries to close off the gap between the new fort at Fort Gomer and Fort Monckton .

Fort Brockhurst Fort Brockhurst is one of the Palmerston Forts, in Gosport, England and a Scheduled Ancient Monument . It is now an English Heritage property .
