The name is derived from Old English ‘Alubeorht’s or Alu(h)burg’s dairy farm’ The name was recorded as Alburwic in 1169, Alber- or Alburckwick in 1278, Awberwyke in 1428, Averwick in 1610 and Abberswick from 1689. The population was 99 people in 1801, 142 in 1811, 135 in 1831, 170 in 1841 and 148 in 1851. Shawdon Hall is a privately owned 18th-century country house located between Bolton and Hedgeley, near Alnwick, Northumberland. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Lemmington Hall is a Grade II* listed country mansion incorporating a 15th-century tower house. The original tower house built for the Beadnall family in the early 15th century was a four-storey construction which was reduced in height in the 17th century when Nicholas Fenwick converted the building into a country house. It was completely restored by Sir Stephen Aitchison in 1913.

Jenny’s Lantern is an area of moorland in north Northumberland, England. It takes its name from an 18th-century folly sited towards the top of a small promontory hill above the River Aln. Situated on the southern slope of the area is an Iron Age hillfort, overbuilt by and adjoined to a larger Romano-British stone-built settlement.
