Yarnbrook history


Yarnbrook has never been a parish in its own right, but the name dates from at least the 16th century. The hamlet grew up around a crossroads where what is now the A350 meets the A363. A pub, now called the Longs Arms and Hungry Horse, was built in 1803. After the First World War, housing development began to spread along the Westbury Road.

West Wiltshire was formed on 1 April 1974, further to the Local Government Act 1972, as a merger of the former urban districts of Bradford-on-Avon, Melksham, Trowbridge, Warminster and Westbury. The district council was based at purpose-built offices in Trowbridge. It was abolished as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England.

Southwick Court is a Grade II* listed moated medieval manor house at the centre of a system of fields and water meadows. It has remained a private residence under a succession of owners for at least 800 years. The current house dates from the late 16th century but its gatehouse is late 15th century.
