Rumworth Lodge Reservoir
Rumworth Lodge Reservoir is a large shallow reservoir in Bolton, Greater Manchester. It is located to the west of Bolton’s A58 (Beaumont Road) and to the South-East of Lostock railway station. Water from the reservoir is not used for drinking water but provides compensation water so that the Middlebrook, which downstream becomes the River Croal, never runs dry.
Gibfield Colliery
Gibfield Colliery was a coal mine owned by Fletcher, Burrows and Company in Atherton, then in the historic county of Lancashire. A shaft was sunk at Gibfield to the Trencherbone mine in 1829 by John Fletcher next to the Bolton and Leigh Railway line which opened in 1830. On 11 February 1850, workers descended the pit and discovered the presence of gas which they tried to disperse with their jackets. The explosion killed five men and burned several others.
