Westdene history
The first part of the suburb to be developed was part of Valley Drive, on which around 30 houses were built in the “Tudorbethan” style between 1932 and 1934. In 1938, local building firm Braybon Ltd signed a contract with Brighton Corporation to develop 168 acres (68 ha) of land nearby as an extension of the Withdean estate. The Second World War intervened, and most of the building work took place in the 1950s. Westdene F.C. were established in 1983 and went out of existence in 2004.

St Joseph’s Church, Brighton St Joseph’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Elm Grove area of Brighton, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. Percy and Wagner Almshouses The Percy and Wagner Almshouses are a group of 12 almshouses in the inner-city Hanover area of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. The first six date from 1795 and are among the few pre-19th-century buildings left in the city. The additional houses of 1859 were provided for unmarried women. The houses were saved from demolition in the 1970s and were rebuilt instead and are still occupied.

Roundhill Crescent Roundhill Crescent is a late-19th-century housing development in Round Hill, an inner suburb of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. Partly developed in the 1860s with large terraced houses on a steeply sloping open hillside. England’s first hospital for the treatment of mental illness was founded in the crescent in 1905. The crescent occupies a prominent place on Brighton’s skyline.
St Nicholas Church, Brighton The Church of Saint Nicholas of Myra is the third oldest surviving building in Brighton. It is located on high ground at the junction of Church Street and Dyke Road in the city centre. Due to its architectural significance the church is a Grade II* listed building.
St Mary Magdalen’s Church, Brighton St Mary Magdalen’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Montpelier area of Brighton, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. It is one of six Roman Catholic churches in Brighton and one of eleven in the city area. Built by ecclesiastical architect Gilbert Blount in a 13th-century Gothic style to serve the rapidly expanding residential area.
St Michael’s Church, Brighton St. Michael’s Church is one of the largest churches in the city of Brighton and Hove. The church is a Grade I listed building.
St Augustine’s Church, Brighton St Augustine’s Church is a former Anglican church in Brighton, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. Built in 1896 and extended in 1914, its parish was extended after a nearby church closed, but in 2003 it was declared redundant itself. The building is listed at Grade II in view of its architectural importance.
Vernon Terrace, Brighton Vernon Terrace is a mid 19th-century residential development in the Montpelier suburb of Brighton. Construction of the first section started in 1856, and the 37-house terrace was complete in the early 1860s. Architecturally, the houses divide into five separate compositions, although all are in a similar late Regency/Italianate style.
Preston Barracks Preston Barracks was a military installation in Lewes Road, Preston, Brighton. The buildings and site are being converted into student residences and a business school.
