Warsash history

Before the 19th century Warsash was a number of separate hamlets; Warsash itself; Hook to the south at the mouth of the River Hamble; Newtown between Hook and Warsash and Chilling on Southampton Water. Hook was of earlier importance, as a ‘dockyard’ during the Hundred Years’ War. In 1807 the shipbuilder George Parsons began construction of a shipyard at Warsash at a site where the present Shore Road was later built.

Warsash Clock Tower

Warsash House Estate built a tower faced by a clock in the centre of the village to hold up to 6,000 gallons of water. In present days the tower has been removed and the clock tower is a private residence.

Warsash has 4 pubs within 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) of each other: The Rising Sun on the shore front, The Ship and Shovel, The Jolly Farmer in Fleet End Road and The Silver Fern.

St Mary’s

The parish church, St Mary’s, dates from 1871. The old vicarage site on Osborne Road has been redeveloped and new houses erected. The approach to the church was previously an undeveloped laurel avenue.

D-Day

On 5 June 1944 British and allied commando units sailed from Warsash for the Normandy Landings. Some of the units were trained at HMS Tormentor.

Segensworth Segensworth is a business park near Whiteley and Fareham in Hampshire. At the 2011 Census the business park was included in the Park Gate Ward of Fareham Council.

Brooklands, Sarisbury Brooklands is an 18th-century country house in Sarisbury in Fareham in the English county of Hampshire. It has been listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England since October 1976.

Swanwick Shore Strict Baptist Chapel Swanwick Shore Strict Baptist Chapel has been in continuous use for worship since 1844. Worshippers gathered there since 1835, led by a pastor who had previously attended a different chapel nearby. Historic England has listed the simple brick building at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.

Bursledon Brickworks Museum The Brickworks Museum, also known as Bursledon Brickworks, is a volunteer-run museum in Swanwick, Hampshire. It is purportedly the UK’s sole surviving Victorian steam-driven brickworks. The brick kiln, chimney, drying sheds, and boiler and engine house are listed Grade II* as a group on the National Heritage List.

Hamble Club F.C. Hamble Club Football Club is a football club based in Hamble-le-Rice, Hampshire. They are currently members of the Wessex League Premier Division and play at the Abbey.

Hamble Common Camp The fort is located on Hamble common on a peninsula of land formed between Southampton Water and the River Hamble. The site was later occupied by St Andrews castle, one of the Device Forts built by King Henry VIII.
