Origins

The draining of Wapping Marsh was finally achieved by 1600 after previous attempts had failed. The settlement developed along that river wall, hemmed in by the river to the south and the now-drained marsh to the north. Wapping was also the site of ‘Execution Dock’, where pirates faced execution by hanging from a gibbet.

Dockland area

The Marine Police Force was formed in 1798 by magistrate Patrick Colquhoun and a Master Mariner, John Harriott, to tackle theft and looting from ships anchored in the Pool of London and the lower reaches of the river. Its base was (and remains) in Wapping High Street and it is now known as the Marine Support Unit. In 1811, the Ratcliff Highway murders took place at the Highway and Wapping Lane.

Modern times

Wapping was devastated by German bombing in the Second World War and by the closure of the docks. It remained a run-down and derelict area into the 1980s when the area was transferred to the management of the London Docklands Development Corporation. Rupert Murdoch’s News International built a new £80m printing and publishing works in the north of Wapping in 1986.

King’s Stairs Gardens King’s Stairs Gardens is a riverside park in Bermondsey, London . It is bordered to the north by the River Thames and to the south by Jamaica Road (A200)

More London More London is a development on the south bank of the River Thames, immediately south-west of Tower Bridge . It is owned by the Kuwaiti sovereign wealth fund, which owns More London . The development is part of an area known as London Bridge City .

John Smith House (Southwark) John Smith House is the former Labour Party headquarters in south London . The party first occupied the building in 1980, vacating its former headquarters at Transport House .
