Trematon history


Trematon appears in the Domesday Book (1086) as the manor of “Tremetone” at 100 households. At 100 households it was one of the very largest settlements in Cornwall and West Devon. Trematon Castle, one and a half miles south-east of the village, stands in a sentinel position overlooking Plymouth Sound.

Trematon Castle is situated near Saltash in Cornwall, England. It was the caput of the feudal barony of Trematon. It is similar in style to the later Restormel Castle, with a 12th-century keep.

Ince Castle was built in 1642, at the start of the English Civil War and captured in 1646. Attached to the house are four three-storey towers with walls 1.2 metres thick. The house and estate was sold in the 1850s and let as a farm but it became increasingly run down and covered in ivy by the 20th century.
