Pre-industrial

Tonypandy is also the site of one of two permanent Middle Ages fortifications found within the Rhondda Valley. Named Ynysygrug, it was a lesser motte and bailey earthwork defence consisting of a wooden tower surrounded by a small fortified courtyard. The name ‘Tonypandy’ means the meadow of the fulling mill which was established in 1838.

Industrial era

Tonypandy is the largest shopping area in the Rhondda and is now largely pedestrianised. In the mid-19th century, the mining district began its industrial transformation after the successful excavation of coal. The Riots of 1910 and 1911 were a series of violent confrontations between miners and police.

District of Rhondda Rhondda was one of six local government districts of Mid Glamorgan from 1974 to 1996. The district was created from parts of Ystradyfodwg, Llanwonno and Llantrisant parishes in 1877. It was renamed Rhondada Urban District in 1897 after the River Rhonda.

Cambrian Colliery Cambrian Colliery was a large coal mine that operated between 1872 and 1967. It is notable for its huge production and for two infamous explosion disasters, in 1905 and 1965, in which a total of 64 miners were killed.

Cambrian & Clydach Vale B.&G.C. Cambrian & Clydach Vale Boys & Girls Club is a Welsh football club. The club was founded in 1965 as Cambrian United and joined the Welsh Football League in 2005. The side finished in promotion positions in Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons.

St Anne’s Church, Ynyshir St Anne’s Church is located in the Welsh village of Ynyshir in the Benefice of Tylorstown in the Rhondda Valley. It dates from the 1880s.

Gilfach Goch Gilfach Goch is a community, electoral ward and small former coal mining village in the Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, south Wales. It is situated in the Cwm Ogwr Fach (Small Ogmore Valley) near the larger community of Tonyrefail.
