Swithland history
Swithland was originally held by Groby until 1412. Part of the village was held by the Danvers (originally called D’Anvers) family. The churchyard of St. Leonard’s includes the tomb of Sir Joseph Danvers, 1st Baronet, which was built half inside the graveyard and half outside (on Danvers’ estate) to allow his favourite dog to be buried with him.
Swithland Estate
The original Swithland Hall, which stood at the eastern end of the village as it is today, was destroyed by fire in 1822. The current hall, a Grade II listed building, was partially completed in 1834 and finished in 1852 by John George Danvers Butler, sixth Earl of Lanesborough. The estate includes the lantern cross that originally stood in Mountsorrel that dates from 1500.

Swithland railway station
Swithland was a railway station on the Great Central Main Line between Rothley and Quorn and Woodhouse. The station was due to open in March 1899 but was never completed. The line through the station site was closed in May 1969.

The River Lin is a river which runs through North Leicestershire. The source of the river is in Ulverscroft, near Charnwood Forest. The river also feeds Cropston Reservoir and Swithland Reservoir.

Woodhouse, Leicestershire
Woodhouse is a small village and civil parish in the heart of Charnwood, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,319, including around 300 term-time boarders at the Defence College. Beaumanor Hall, ancestral home of the Herrick family, was used as listening station during the war and intercepted signals intelligence for Bletchley Park.
