Kilton and Lilstock were separate ancient parishes, part of the Williton and Freemanners Hundred. Kilton took its name from Kilve Hill, meaning Strenge’s settlement. It was first mentioned in 873, when King Alfred gave his estate at Kilton to Edward the Elder.

Stowey Castle Norman motte-and-bailey castle was built in the 11th century in the village of Nether Stowey on the Quantock Hills in Somerset. It has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
