Stowbridge history
At the time of the Domesday Book in 1085, Stowbridge did not exist, and the Great Ouse did not run through the area. In around 1181, a group of hermetic women arrived from Lynn to set up a community in a marshy place. This community became regularised in the mid 1180s when the Prior of Raynham gave them a Charter of Incorporation. After massive flooding from inland water in the early 13th Century which washed away the nunnery such that they had to seek refuge at St Mary Magdalen.
