Stevenage lies near the line of the Roman road from Verulamium to Baldock. Some Romano-British remains were discovered during the building of the New Town. A hoard of 2,000 silver Roman coins was discovered during house-building in the Chells Manor area in 1986.

“Stevenage” may derive from Old English stiþen āc / stiðen – stithen ac – meaning “(place at) the stiff oak” The name was recorded as Stithenæce in c.1060 and as Stigenace in the Domesday Book in 1086.

Rooks Nest House Rooks Nest House is Grade I listed for its historical interest and literary associations. It was the childhood home of the author E. M. Forster (1879–1970) who described it in the novel Howards End. Forster’s mother Lily rented the property between 1883 and 1893.

Six Hills The Six Hills are a collection of Roman barrows situated on Six Hills Common in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. They are classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and are protected by law. They form the largest surviving Roman barrow group in England.
