Its name is locally pronounced Shray-den, and was often spelt “Shraydon” in old documents. The placename originates from Old English worðign “enclosed settlement” combined with either scraef “cave” or screawa “shrew”

Shrawardine Castle was dismantled during the English Civil War in 1645. It had been held since 1644 by the Royalist commander Sir William Vaughan. The castle was known as Castell Isabella by the Anglo-Normans.

St Andrew’s Church, Great Ness St Andrew’s Church is in the village of Great Ness, Shropshire. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Ellesmere, the archdeaconry of Salop, and the diocese of Lichfield.
