Sholden history


It has previously been known as ‘Soldone’ and ‘Scholdon’ It is the starting point of the Miner’s Way Trail, a hiking trail linking up coalfield parishes of East Kent. It has a Grade II* listed church, St Nicholas, which is in the diocese of Canterbury and deanery of Sandwich.

Hamilton Road Cemetery is a combined municipal and military burial ground in Deal, Kent. Opened in May 1856, it was created to provide a new burial ground for the town’s growing population. It contains a Cross of Sacrifice of some significance and the burials of military service personnel from Great Britain, Belgium, Canada, and, very unusually, Nazi Germany.

Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club is an 18-hole links golf course in southeastern England. Founded 129 years ago in 1892, its name derives from Deal’s membership of an ancient group of trading towns granted special privileges by the medieval English monarchs. The course runs along the coast of Sandwich Bay, on the same stretch of coastline as Royal St George’s and Prince’s Golf Club, adjacent to the north.

The Royal Marine Depot, Deal was first established in 1861, occupying part of the Royal Naval Hospital. In 1868 the Depot expanded and took over the nearby 18th-century Army barracks. From 1930 the Depot served as the headquarters of Royal Naval School of Music. In 1977 the training Depot closed and the site was renamed Royal Marines, Deal. In 1988 parts of the site were demolished and sold for housing.

New Mill is a Grade II listed smock mill in Northbourne, Kent. It was built in 1848 and has been converted to residential accommodation.

Finglesham Anglo-Saxon cemetery is a place of burial that was used from the sixth to the eighth centuries CE. It was part of the wider tradition of burial in Early Saxon England. Many of the dead were interred with grave goods, which included personal ornaments, weapons and domestic items.
