Radlett history

Pre-Roman period

Radlett is situated on the ancient Watling Street, one of the oldest trackways in Britain. The Catuvellauni tribe settled in parts of Hertfordshire, near St Albans and Wheathamstead in about 80BC, but no trace of settlement has been found in or near Radlett itself.

Roman period

During the Roman occupation of Verulamium, the area from Radlett to Brockley Hill was home to a number of major potteries. Potteries are still in evidence at the southern end of the village, in the area around Cobden hill and Tabard RFC.

Post-Roman period

The area was settled by the Saxons by the sixth century, with suggestions that a Saxon church was established on the site of Aldenham Church in King Offa’s time. For most of recorded history, the land to the East of Watling Street was administered separately to that on the West. The Domesday survey of 1086 confirms most of the land was in the possession of the Abbey of Westminster.

Modern period

In 1823 the town was the site of the Radlett murder, a notorious crime which became the subject of numerous books and stage plays. In 1860 the Midland Railway was extended from Bedford into London and a station was built at Radlett connecting it with London. In 1865 the Ecclesiastical Parish of Radlett was created out of the eastern part of Aldenham and this marks the start of the modern history of the village. The introduction of the Metropolitan Green Belt in the 1950s set a legal framework limiting further outward growth.

Denis Compton Oval The Denis Compton Oval is located at the Shenley Cricket Centre in Shenley, Hertfordshire. The ground was opened by Denis Compton and the main ground was named in his honour.

Shenley Hospital Shenley Hospital was a psychiatric hospital at Shenley in Hertfordshire. It had two sister institutions, Harperbury Hospital and Napsbury Hospital, within a few miles of its location.

Kingsley Green Harperbury Hospital is a mental health and learning disability site located in Hertfordshire, England. It was known for 61 years and has been a fixture of the area’s mental health scene since 1928. By late 2001 Harperbury had only about 200 patients and the hospital was officially closed. The new Kingsley Green mental health facility opened on the site in May 2009.

Tykes Water Tykes Water is a minor tributary of the River Colne in Hertfordshire in England. Its head waters are a network of drainage ditches west of the A41 near Bushey that feed into Aldenham reservoir. The outlet of the reservoir then flows north into the lake in Haberdashers’ Aske’s School grounds. It then proceeds north to make a confluence with a secondary stream, also called Tyke Water, near Kendal Hall Farm.

Shenley Shenley is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England, between Barnet and St Albans. The village is located 14 miles from Central London.

Shenley Hall Shenley Hall is a Grade II listed country house at Shenley in Hertfordshire. It is located in the town of Shenley and is situated in the county of Hertforshire. The hall was built in the 1930s and is now owned by a family.

Hilfield Castle Hilfield Castle is 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Watford and 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of Aldenham, in Hertfordshire, on the outskirts of London. The estate contains two large reservoirs, one of which were built by French prisoners of war in the 1790s.
