Toponymy

Oddingley was recorded in 816 as Oddingalea. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Oddunclei. The name derives from the Old English for “Woodland clearing of the family or followers of [a man called] Odda”

19th century

In 1806, Oddingley became known for the unsolved murder of the village parson, George Parker. Parker was shot and beaten to death by a man widely suspected to be Richard Hemming, a carpenter from Droitwich. Hemming was never apprehended and it was believed he had escaped the country.

Oddingley geography / climate

Oddingley lies 9 km (5.6 mi) north-east of Worcester and about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Droitwich. Nearby villages include Hadzor, Newland, Dunhampstead, Saleway, Sale Green and Tibberton.

Hindlip Hall Hindlip Hall is a stately home in Hindlip, Worcestershire, England. The first major hall was built before 1575 and played a significant role in the Babington and Gunpowder plots. Four people were executed and the owner barely escaped execution himself due to the intercession of Lord Monteagle.

Huddington Court Huddington Court is a 15th-century moated manor house in Worcestershire. It was the home of the Wintour family, of which the Gunpowder plot conspirators Robert, Thomas and John are the most notorious. Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England since 1952.
