Muchelney history

The village was recorded as Micelenie in the Domesday book meaning ‘the increasingly great island’ from the Old English micel and from the Norsk Øe suffix. The parish of Muchelney was part of the Pitney Hundred. The village is best known as the site of the Benedictine abbey founded by King Athelstan in 939, and largely demolished in the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

A highlight of the summer in Muchelney and adjacent Thorney is the mid-summer Lowland Games. The light-hearted adaptation of the Highland games has been running since 1984. The winning act of the bands gets a gig at the Glastonbury Festival.

Church of St John Baptist, Pitney The Anglican Church of St John Baptist was built in the 13th and 14th century. It is a Grade II* listed building in Pitney, Somerset.

Christ Church, Long Load Christ Church is a former Church of England church in Long Load, Somerset. It was built in 1854–1856 on the site of an earlier chapel and closed in 2011. It is now a Grade II listed building.
