Motherwell history
Motherwell’s name reportedly comes from a well dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name “Moderwelt” appears on a map of Lanarkshire made by Timothy Pont some time between 1583 and 1611 and printed in the Netherlands in around 1652. By the start of the 20th century Motherwell stood a large and growing industrial centre, a town of 37,000 people.

Cambusnethan House Cambusnethan House was designed by James Gillespie Graham and completed in 1820. It is listed on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland as a building facing “critical” risk. The house is two and three storeys high with turrets at each corner, a three-storey bow in the west elevation.

Chatelherault Country Park Chatelherault Country Park is a country park in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Its name is derived from the French town of Châtellerault. The country park is centred on the former hunting lodge, a folly designed to be seen from the now demolished Hamilton Palace. The lodge was designed by William Adam and completed in 1734.
Cadzow Castle Cadzow Castle was constructed between 1500 and 1550 at a site one mile south-east of the centre of Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The castle sits above a gorge overlooking the Avon Water in what is now Chatelherault Country Park, but was previously the hunting grounds of the Duke of Hamilton’s estate of Hamilton Palace.

Motherwell Town Hall Motherwell Town Hall is a municipal facility in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire. The town hall was the headquarters of the Burgh of Motherwell and Wishaw Council. It is a Category C listed building.
David Colville & Sons David Colville & Sons opened its Dalzell Steel and Iron Works at Motherwell in 1872. By the first World War, it was the largest steel works in Scotland. Nationalised in 1951, it became part of the Iron and Steel Corporation of Great Britain. It was privatised in 1955 and the construction of Ravenscraig steelworks resulted in the closure of its other works.

The town has three stations, a main railway station (known simply as Motherwell), Airbles and Shieldmuir. The main station runs on the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow to London and on the East Coast Line via Edinburgh and Newcastle. Formerly, Motherwell, Wishaw and Hamilton were served by the Lanarkshire Tramways.
Roads
Motherwell is very accessible, as it is right next to the M74 motorway beside the River Clyde. This road leads to Cumbria on the Anglo-Scottish border, where it becomes the M6. It is also about 3 miles (5 km) drive from the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
