Minsmere history
At the Domesday Survey in 1086 Minsmere was known as Menesmara or Milsemere. It is recorded as having six households headed by freemen with one plough team. Ranulf de Glanvill, King Henry II’s Lord Chief Justice, founded an abbey on the marshes in 1182. The marshes were drained for agricultural use in the 1840s but reflooded during the Second World War.
Minsmere geography / climate
Minsmere is in a low-lying area of the Suffolk coast approximately 24 miles (39 km) north-east of Ipswich. It is in the civil parishes of Westleton and Leiston. The landscape is largely flat along the line of the river and is largely drained and re-flooded marshland.

Minsmere–Walberswick Heaths and Marshes
Minsmere–Walberswick Heaths and Marshes are a Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest in Suffolk. The site is located on the North Sea coast between Southwold and Sizewell, extending over an area of coastline around 7 miles (11 km) in length. It lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is made up of a “complex mosaic” of marshes, reed beds, shingle banks and lowland heath habitats.
Dunwich Heath
Dunwich Heath is an area of coastal lowland heath just south of the village of Dunwich, in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, England. It lies within the Minsmere-Walberswick Heaths and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. It has been owned by the National Trust since 1968, when it was bought with the help of a donation from Heinz.
