Icklesham’s historic roots can be traced back to 772, when it appeared as Icoleshamme in a land charter signed by Offa, King of Mercia. Strategically located on the River Brede, it was a prime target in the Norman invasion of 1066. The 12th Century church of All Saints & St. Nicholas was restored by Samuel Sanders Teulon in the late 1840s.

Icklesham landmarks

The parish contains three Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Winchelsea Cutting, Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay and Rye Harbour. Hogg Hill Mill is used as a recording studio by Sir Paul McCartney.

Greyfriars, Winchelsea Greyfriars is a country estate in Winchelsea, East Sussex. It contains a ruined medieval monastery and church and a 19th-century house.

St Leonard’s Mill, Winchelsea St Leonard’s mill was a post mill at Winchelsea, East Sussex, England. It was blown down in the Great Storm of 1987.

River Brede The Brede is an English river in East Sussex. It flows into the Rock Channel (tidal section of the River Tillingham) and then onto the River Rother at Rye, Sussex.
