The name Gartcosh might be derived perhaps from the Gaelic ‘Gart’ meaning ‘field’ and ‘Cos’, meaning ‘hollow’ or ‘enclosure of the foot’ In the early 19th century there were a number of mines in the local area. By 1837 there was a railway station, or to be more accurate a stopping place as there were no platforms or waiting rooms. The resident Roman Catholic population travel to the neighbouring towns to practise their faith.

Drumpellier Country Park Drumpellier Country Park is a country park situated to the west of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The park covers an area of 500 acres (2.0 km) and comprises two natural lochs (one of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest), lowland heath, mixed woodlands and open grassland. The loch and canal attract many water birds, both resident (swans and mallard ducks) and over-wintering migrants.
