In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson’s Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Elsecar as having a population of 1912 and 353 dwelling places.

Industry

Elsecar’s development can be seen as a microcosm of the whole Industrial Revolution in Britain. The village was formed to take advantage of the coal resources in the area, the Carboniferous Middle Coal Measures, the Kents Thick and Kents Thin coal seams. Many of the new buildings were built by the Earl Fitzwilliam, who resided in nearby Wentworth Woodhouse, to house colliery workers.

Elsecar-by-the-Sea

In 1910 a local amateur photographer, Herbert Parkin, took some photographs of the local reservoir and surrounding areas and sent them into the Sheffield Star under the caption Elsecar-by-the-Sea. With the help of a good transport link from Sheffield via the local railway station, a thriving tourism business was established.

RSPB Dearne Valley Old Moor RSPB Dearne Valley Old Moor is an 89-hectare (220-acre) wetlands nature reserve. It lies on the junction of the A633 and A6195 roads and is bordered by the Trans Pennine Trail. The reserve, along with others nearby, forms part of a landscape-scale project to create wildlife habitat.

Lundhill Colliery explosion The Lundhill Colliery explosion took place on 19 February 1857 in Wombwell, Yorkshire, UK. 189 men and boys aged between 10 and 59 died. It was the first disaster to appear on the front page of the Illustrated London News.

Elsecar Elsecar is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. It was for many years a colliery village until the widespread pit closures during the 1980s. It is thought to derive from the Old English personal name of Aelfsige.

Milton Ironworks Milton Ironworks was an iron works established in the 19th century in the Elsecar area of Barnsley, West Yorkshire, England.

Elsecar Ironworks The Elsecar Ironworks opened in 1795 in the village near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The company was bankrupted in 1827 and taken over by the Wentworth estate who owned the land it stood on.
