Elmsted was not named in the Domesday book but Bodsham, one of the hamlets in the parish was noted. The Roman road Stone Street defines part of the parish’s eastern border. One of the more prominent families were the Honywoods who lived at Evington from the 1400s until the 1900s.

The parish itself is 11 kilometers east of Ashford which is the nearest town. The settlements in the parish are very scattered which can be attributed to the agricultural nature of the parish.

Park Gate Down is a 7-hectare (17-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Stelling Minnis in Kent. It is also a Special Area of Conservation and is managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust.

Davison’s Mill, also known as Stelling Minnis Windmill, is a Grade I listed smock mill. It was the last windmill working commercially in Kent when it closed in the autumn of 1970. It is open to visitors each year from Easter Sunday to the end of September.
