Dungannon history

Dungannon was the main stronghold of the O’Neill dynasty which ruled a large part of Ulster until the 17th century. The town was the location of the independence of the Irish Parliament in 1782. The castle was partially excavated in October 2007, by the Channel 4 archaeological show Time Team, uncovering part of the castle.

The Troubles

In August 1968, Northern Ireland’s first civil rights march was held from Coalisland to Dungannon. The march was officially banned, but took place and passed off without incident. The publicity surrounding the march encouraged other groups to form branches of NICRA. Almost 50 people were killed in and around the town during the Troubles.

Dungannon geography / climate

Dungannon is in the southeast of County Tyrone. The town grew up around a hill, known locally as Castle Hill. There are three small lakes on the southern edge of town, the biggest of which is Black Lough.

Townlands

Dungannon sprang up in a townland called Drumcoo. Over time, the urban area has spread into neighbouring townlands. Many of its roads and housing estates are named after them.

Dungannon Greyhound Stadium Dungannon Greyhound Stadium or Oaks Park was a greyhound racing track. It was held on Oaks Road, Dungan non-Tyrone, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Dungannon Thomas Clarkes GAC Dungannon Thomas Clarkes GFC (Cumann Thomáis Uí Chléirigh Dún Geanainn) was formed in 1917 and is named after one of the executed leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. The club has won 11 Senior Football Championships and 3 Intermediate Football Championships. O’Neill Park has been the home of the Clarkes since 1947.
