Downley history


The Le De (not Lady) Spencers Arms at the very top of the common dates from the 17th century. It is believed to have been a watering hole for drovers who passed through from Wales on their way to London. The oldest house in the village, Blacksmiths Cottage, dates from 12th or 13th century.

Downley photo Hellfire Caves
The Hellfire Caves are a network of man-made chalk and flint caverns which extend 260m underground. They were excavated between 1748 and 1752 for Francis Dashwood, 11th Baron le Despencer (2nd Baronet), founder of the Hellfire Club. The caves have been operating as a tourist attraction since 1863.
