Dinorwig history
Dinorwig has a long history of slate quarrying. The Romans used local slate for the construction of Segontium and Caernarfon Castle. The main local quarry was the Dinorwic Quarry, which was worked from the late 1770s until 1969. After the First World War, cheaper alternative roofing materials became available.
Dinorwig etymology
It is thought that it was part of the territory of the pre-Roman Ordovices tribe. The element -orwig, -orweg has been thought to derive from the tribal name. From mediaeval times it has been part of Llanddeiniolen.

The Dinorwig Power Station is a pumped-storage hydroelectric scheme. It can supply a maximum power of 1,728-megawatt (2,317,000 hp) and has a storage capacity of around 9.1 GWh (33 TJ)
Snowdon Mountain Railway
The Snowdon Mountain Railway (SMR) is a narrow gauge rack and pinion mountain railway in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It is a tourist railway that travels for 4.7 miles (7.6 km) from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. The SMR was the inspiration for the fictional Culdee Fell Railway, appearing in the book Mountain Engines.
Gilfach Ddu
Gilfach Ddu (also known as Dinorwic Slate Quarry Quarry Workshops) are a series of well preserved Grade I listed industrial buildings. The complex includes saw sheds, patternmaking shops, foundry with copula, blacksmiths shops, fitting shops, stores, engine sheds, a canteen, the chief engineers house, a hand operated crane and two waterwheels which provided the site with its power.
