Chiswick history
Chiswick was first recorded c. 1000 as the Old English Ceswican meaning “Cheese Farm” The area was settled in Roman times; an urn found at Turnham Green contained Roman coins, and Roman brickwork was found under the Sutton manor house. In 1822, the Royal Horticultural Society leased 33 acres (13.4 ha) of land in the area south of the High Road between what are now Sutton Court Road and Duke’s Avenue. The population grew tenfold during the 19th century, reaching 29,809 in 1901.
