Roy’s map of 1747 records the settlement of Burnhouse on the Beith to Kilmarnock road. The Lochlibo Road did not exist at the time. The 1828 John Thomson’s map is the first to show Burnhouse as a crossroads.

The Trap

“The Trap” is a contraction of “Man Trap” or “Trap ‘Em” because the village lies on the old turnpike road, the Lochlibo Road from Irvine to Glasgow via Lugton . The inn at Lugton was called the “Lug ‘Em Inn” and the one at Torranyard was called “Turn ‘Em Out”

Thurgartstone The Thurgartstone or Ogrestone is a prominent glacial erratic stone near Dunlop in East Ayrshire, Scotland . It is thought to have been a rocking stone at one time, but it no longer moves due to a build up of soil beneath .

Hessilhead Hessilhead used to be called Hazlehead or Hasslehead. The lands were part of the Lordship of Giffen and the Barony of Hessilheads. The castle was situated at grid reference NS380532.
