Bolsover is mentioned in Domesday Book, named as Belesovre, where it is described as the property of William Peverel (or “Peveril”) The origin of the name is uncertain. It may be derived from Bull’s Ridge or Boll’s Ofer. In 1657 the leading Royalist William Cavendish, 1st Marquess of Newcastle, published his book La Methode et Invention nouvelle de dresser les Chevaux, written in exile in Antwerp during the Cromwellian Protectorate. This was translated in 1743 to A General System of Horsemanship in All its Branches.

St Leonard’s Church, Scarcliffe St Leonard’s Church, Scarcliffe is a Grade II* listed parish church in Scarcliffe, Derbyshire. It was built in the 1930s and is located in the area of Scarcliffe.

Honour of Peverel Honour of Peverel is part of the historic feudal barony held by the Norman family. The honour was granted to William the Conqueror (c. 1050 – 1115) and consisted of 162 manors including Bolsover Castle. The Honour is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Bolsover Castle Bolsover Castle is in the north-east of the English county of Derbyshire. Built in the early 17th century, the present castle lies on the earthworks and ruins of the 12th-century medieval castle. The site is now in the care of English Heritage charity, as both a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Bolsover Hospital Bolsover Hospital was a community healthcare facility. It was managed by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. It is now owned by a local health trust.

Bolsover District At the 2011 Census, the district had a population of 75,866. It is named after the town of Bolsover, but the council is based in Clowne, Derbyshire.
