Toponymy

The name Arkley was first recorded as Arkleyslond in 1332. The first element of the name appears to come from the Old English word (e)arc (or ark), meaning a chest, bin or other wooden receptacle. The second element is from leāh, a woodland clearing or glade.

Arkley was commonly known as “Barnet Common” or “West Barnet” The name, “Grendel’s Gate”, is associated with the monster from the Saxon epic, Beowulf. It is thought by some that Hendon Wood Lane was originally a minor Roman road.

Buildings

St Peter’s Church was built in 1840 as a private chapel at a cost of £5,000. It contains a wall tablet of its benefactor, Enoch Durant, who died in 1848. Arkley Windmill was in use by 1806 and ceased to be a functioning mill during World War I.

The estate was originally settled as a manor in Elizabethan times. The house has been listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England since 1949.

The series launched on 18 August 2011, and ended after 22 days on 8 September 2011. It was won by Irish traveller and reality television star Paddy Doherty. Jedward returned to the house for Celebrity Big Brother 19 as All-Stars, representing this series.

Greenhill was a house and estate on the site of the former Pricklers estate to the south of Chipping Barnet, on the borders of Hertfordshire and Middlesex, in what is now north London.

Barnet Common was created after a wood was cleared in the 16th century. It was the location of a Digger colony and the Barnet Physic Well at which mineral water was consumed. Part of the Common was enclosed in 1729 and the rest in 1815.
