West Mickley history
West Mickley Colliery mined coal, iron pyrites and fireclay just east of the village between 1900 and 1924. The village expanded in the late 19th and early 20th century. There was also a small quarry opposite the Blue Bell Inn at some time before the mid-19th century, but this and the top end of the Belasis Burn / High Close Woods were filled in.
