Mitcham Borough Council helped to meet the post-World War II housing shortage by building prefabricated ‘Arcon’ bungalows at Pollards Hill. The first were ready by January 1946, meant to last about 10 years. The pre-fabs were mostly demolished in the 1960s to make way for a new, high density, low-rise scheme.
