Plains, North Lanarkshire history
Plains was founded in the mid-19th century along what is now the A89 Airdrie to Bathgate road. The population of the village in 1860 is recorded at just over 200. The main employers were the Geest Company and Beechams. Scotland’s largest opencast coal mine is currently in operation at Drumshangie Moss, a few miles north-west of Plains.
