Newmains history
The Coltness Iron Works was established in 1837 by industrialist, Henry Houldsworth. He decided to diversify into minerals after foreseeing the demise of the once booming cotton industry. Coltness works survived until very recently as a railway sleeper manufacturing facility for Tarmac.
