The 19th century

Nechells became a densely populated area during the 19th century, with mass development of houses and factories taking place . Mass immigration occurred from Ireland .

The 20th century and later

After World War II, further immigration occurred from parts of the Commonwealth, mostly the Caribbean and the Indian Sub Continent . After the war, more immigration occurred in the Caribbean .

The Siege of Austin Street

Rev. Elwyn Evans was called upon by police to negotiate with a man who barricaded himself in his house . The man had fired an unloaded air pistol from the window of his house in Austin Street . Rev. Evans eventually persuaded the man to give himself up and accompanied the man as he surrendered to the police .
