Goathland history
Goathland village is 486 feet (148 m) above sea level and has a recorded history dating back to just after the Norman Conquest. The name is probably a corruption of ‘good land’ or ‘Goda’s land’ The grade II* listed Church of St Mary, was built between 1894 and 1896. Much of the surrounding land is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster.
