Brackla history

Until 1936, the 900 acres (3.6 km) of land between Bridgend and Brackla was farmland. ROF 53 was the biggest single factory in Western Europe at its peak, and employed some 40,000 people. After World War II, the factory was closed completely by 1946.

Nuclear Bunker

In the late 1960s, two of the former munitions tunnels were redeveloped as a nuclear command bunker for South Wales. Brackla became the regional control centre for all of Wales, redesignated RGHQ 8.2.2. Sold in 1996, it has been derelict ever since.
